The Great Gatsby

May 12th, 2013

There was a competition that I entered this week, to create an artwork inspired by the Great Gatsby.  No images or stills from the new movie could be used.

I decided to do a mixed media collage on a canvas.  I had a lot of 1920s and vintage images that were suitable, and I printed up some of my favourite quotes in 1920s inspired fonts.

Art Deco revisited

October 12th, 2012

This was for my friend’s birthday a few weeks ago.  I found a gorgeous gift bag with 1920s images on it, and decided to make a card to match.  The main colours on the bag (other than black) were pink and turquoise so I focused on using them.

Vintage Art Deco

The art deco stamp was stamped onto white paper, then coloured with chalks for a soft pastel effect.  This was mounted onto a metallic cream cardstock that had a slight pattern.  This in turn was mounted on turquoise cardstock that had been embossed with flourishes using my manual die cutting and embossing machine.  The cream base card was stamped repeatedly with a lily flourish stamp and then the assemblage was placed on top.

My workmate who commissioned the Ars Longa card then asked me for another one.  She had a look at this site (hi Bel!) and asked for a card based on the 50th Birthday Card I did last year.

Because I was working on an A5 folded to A6 card, it was half the size of the original one, which meant I had to change things around a bit.  This is what I came up with:

Art Deco Card

Floral paper put on cardstock and then swiped around the edges with purple ink.  Image is stamped on sheer heaven.  I was going to put it directly onto the floral paper, but too much of the detail was lost, so I put a piece of cardstock behind, which has been spritzed with two colours of glimmer mist (purple and blue).  That is offset at an angle, but the image became visible. The paper flower was spritzed with the same two colours and has a gem attached to the centre.

50th birthday card

April 6th, 2010

This was for a lady at work whose 50th birthday fell on Valentine’s day.  She always wears bright colours, and I was going for an art deco feel.

The layers are cardstock, floral paper, green cardstock, and white card which has been sponged for the stamped image.  The vellum has been edged with copper ink, and the flowers have copper coloured gems at the centre.
